Why People Have Pets
Pets have been the favored companions of humans since ancient times. There are several stories and fairy tales about how humans and their pets have shared a loving and mutually fulfilling relationship. In the twenty-first century, the same trend has continued although some of the reasons for keeping pets might have changed.
You must have seen old people walking around with a dog. Their main reason for keeping a pet is for company. They just want a substitute for a family. These days when joint family system is no longer acceptable to the new generation, the elderly feel quite lonely living alone and want someone to be with. These people prefer the company of lap dogs which are affectionate and can be stroked at length. However, these elderly people have to be very careful while choosing their pet. A big dog who needs a lot of space and exercise would not work for them. They have to look out for apartment dogs like dachshunds, which are bred specially for this purpose and can be maintained with minimum effort.
Another reason why people keep pets is because pets help them to socialize better. Imagine a situation where you have shifted to a new location and don’t know your neighbours well enough. But if you have a dog, chances are that the conversation about the dog will act as the ice-breaker and help you interact with people around you. People are more inclined to chat with you if you have a dog that is friendly and wags his tail at the drop of a hat.
People also like keeping pets because they are beautiful and interesting. Birds, cats, dogs, fishes all have some interesting characteristic. Actually animals are attractive, per se. How many times you have found yourself glued to Discovery Channel or Animal Planet just because you want to see what the animal is up to. Imagine what effect a real flesh and blood animal will have on your household. Children especially find pets quite attractive and fun to play with. So if you have children and are thinking of bringing a pet home, make sure you get a friendly pet that can mingle easily with the children. In addition, some children have allergies to fur so you should be careful to get a pet which does not cause any allergies.
Pets also act as a very important status symbol. The kind of pet you have reflects on your lifestyle. If you have a dangerous looking dog, people will think twice before messing with you. It has been found that people sub-consciously pick up pets which match their personality.
Some people just keep pets out of boredom. They have plenty of time and wish to spend it constructively. If you are one of such people, then you can go in for high maintenance pets. Some dogs need a lot of attention and long walks and exercises in order to be kept healthy. You have time and they need lots of attention, a perfect match.
