Scooby Doo 2 – Monsters Unleashed

Scooby Doo 2 – Monsters UnleashedIn Scooby Doo 2 – Monsters Unleashed Scooby Doo and the Mystery Inc gang of four is invited to attend the grand opening of The Coolsonian Criminology Museum in Coolsville. This museum exhibits the many colorful costumes of the various monsters which Mystery Inc had battled with over the years. Essentially this is an ego massage and stroll down memory lane for the four-member team and their four-legged friend. It’s like just relax and take it easy while basking in the adoration of their fans. It’s also like very out of character until an evil masked figure turns up to add more pizazz to the gathering.

Raja Gosnell was back at the helm in 2004 to direct another Scooby Doo derring-do for Warner Bros. The movie Scooby Doo 2 – Monsters Unleashed was the sequel to Scooby Doo movie produced in 2002. Raja Gosnell was also the director for that movie. The writer was James Gunn who had also done the earlier movie. Shaggy Rogers, Fred Jones, Daphne Black and Velma Dinkley were played by Matthew Lillard, Freddie Prinze, Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar and Linda Cardellini. Scooby Doo spoke through the voice of Neil Fanning. This was a live action movie with only Scooby Doo in an animated format.

This movie has lots and lots of monsters. At the opening of The Coolsonian Criminology Museum, the Evil Masked Figure (played by Scott Neil) brings The Pterodactyl Ghost costume to life. In the ensuing mayhem, he makes off with two more costumes, The Black Knight Ghost and the 10,000 Volt Ghost.

Then the press starts a smear campaign against the Mystery Inc gang. News reporter Heather Jasper-Howe (played by Alicia Silverstone) is in the forefront of the attack. Somehow Fred and Daphne’s chumminess doesn’t quite chime with her.

The gang goes into think-tank mode. After going through a number of possibilities, they decide that “Old Man” Jeremiah Wickles (played by Peter Boyle) is the most likely candidate for villain at large. Jeremiah was the man behind The Black Knight Ghost. So they head to his domicile.

At Jeremiah’s manor, they find an incriminating book. It is essentially a guide on how to create monsters. Before they could delve further, they are attacked by the reanimated Black Knight Ghost. Fortunately the book they found includes a guide on how to defeat monsters, too. So the gang wins round one.

Shaggy and Scooby get a mystifying note. Following up on the note, they find themselves in The Faux Ghost which is a night club. Ghosts from their past are in wait. They make it safely through this round, too.

Shadowing Jeremiah, they arrive in Coolsville’s old mining factory. Here they find another piece of the jigsaw. It is randomonium which is a critical ingredient in the production of monsters. So far so good. Until they go back to the museum to find that all the other ghost costumes have been stolen. Seems like someone is going into monster production is a big way.

There is no actual data on the issue but it is just possible that the creator of Scooby Doo might have used a dab of randomonium. Scooby Doo is everyone’s favorite animation of a Great Dane.

Great Danes are big dogs. This breed comes from Denmark. It has been variously accoladed as “Apollo of all breeds” and “The World’s Largest Lap Dog”. The tallest living dog is George, a Great Dane, which stands at 7.2 ft from the top of its big head to the tip of its pointed tail. A Great Dane male, at eighteen months, tips the scales at a minimum of 120 lb.

Yet, for all its size, the Great Dane is a gentle giant. Its general outlook on life is peace to one and all, man or beast. Frenetic activity is neither its hallmark nor its trademark. This is where the suspicion about the possibility of randomonium in Scooby Doo’s composition arises.

Scooby Doo does not run through the scenes in the Scooby Doo 2 Monsters Unleashed movie. Zip through is the more accurate description. Which is the only expedient mode of locomotion when Shaggy and Scooby Doo, unwittingly, turns on the monster-making machine.

All kinds of monsters now run amok through the movie Scooby Doo 2 – Monsters Unleashed. The gang has their hands full dealing with The Skeleton Men, The Zombie, Captain Cutler’s Ghost, The Miner Forty-Niner, just to name a few. At times, there are so many of them that it hard to see which way the gang can go to get out of their grasps and clutches.

In the end, the master villain, the Evil Masked Figure, is, well, unmasked. See the Scooby Doo 2 DVD to have a look at the face behind the cover.
