Must Love Dogs

Must Love DogsThe song “Love me, love my dog” kept running through my mind as I watched the movie Must Love Dogs.

The movie was about the twists and turns in the life of a determined woman who thought that any man who loved dogs could not be all that bad and set her mind on getting one like that.

Warner Brothers Pictures, in 2005, produced the movie Must Love Dogs which was directed by Gary David Goldberg based on the novel by Claire Cook. Gary David Goldberg was also responsible for adapting the novel to the screen. John Cussack played Jake, a man without a wife, and Diane Lane played Sarah Nolan, a woman without a husband, who, eventually, found Jake to be the person she wanted to share her life with. Mother Theresa, the Newfoundland, was played by twins bitches, Molly and Mabel, who were adopted by the director after the production of the movie was finished.

A Newfoundland is a big dog. The biggest Newfoundland weighed 120 kilograms and measured six feet from nose tip to tail tip but, in general, Newfoundlands weighed between 60 to 70 kilograms for males and 45 to 55 kilograms for females. Common colors are black, brown, gray and landseer which is a black or brown head with white and black body. The Landseer was named after the artist Sir Edwin Henry Landseer who painted many of them.

Strong and steady giant is an apt description for a Newfoundland. Originally from Newfoundland in Canada, this breed is one branch derived from the St. John’s Dog. The other branch is the Labrador. Newfoundlands are bigger and stronger than Labradors as well as less playful. Newfoundlands are well-known for their innate instinct for rescuing people from drowning in water. There are numerous true accounts of Newfoundlands playing a critical role in rescue missions. In the early twentieth century, a Newfoundland was involved in the rescue of ninety-two people who were on a sinking ship in Newfoundland during a blizzard. In 1995, another Newfoundland, named Boo, rescued a hearing-impaired man from drowning in the Yuba River in Northern California.

In the movie Must Love Dogs, Mother Theresa, the canine star, rescued Jake and Carol from lonely lives adrift in the vast ocean of life. Mother Theresa was big, black and hairy. Looked rather like an African cousin of a Saint Bernard. For Carol, Mother Theresa was the litmus test to tell whether a man would make a good partner in life. She, or rather her sister, Carol – played by Elizabeth Perkins – thought that any man who could love Mother Theresa, would make good husband material.

Cupid may be a marksman but in the Must Love Dogs movie, Cupid’s arrow took a rather zig-zag path. Maybe Cupid used cruise missile technology. There were many times in the movie when it seemed that he could have missed his mark. Finally, it took an impromptu rowing contest in a lake to settle the issue. The deal was sealed with a kiss. Mother Theresa was all wet and took it in her stride, unperturbed. Which was exactly what a Newfoundland was supposed to do. Steady and loyal, through wind and snow, and, in this case, water, too.

If you are looking for a husband or a wife, as the case might be, it might be a good idea to get a dog first. Newfoundlands are a good choice.
