Firehouse Dog
A canine superstar left behind a life of pampered luxury to become the mascot of a firehouse. This brief outline of the movie Firehouse Dog did not quite cover the full repertoire of the acrobatic antics and intelligent capers of the canine star, Rexxx, an Irish Terrier.
I have no reservations about recommending this movie to dog-lovers. Especially lovers of humorous dogs. Humorous dogs with very big hearts. A dog that made the right choice in the end.

In 2007, Twentieth Century Fox presented the movie Firehouse Dog which was produced by New Regency Pictures with C.O.R.E. Digital Pictures. Todd Holland directed from the screenplay produced by Claire-Dee Lim, Mike Werb and Michael Colleary. The Firehouse Dog, Rexxx, was played by an Irish Setter.
The Irish Terrier, of course, is from Ireland. It is described as racy, red and rectangular. Racy as in power-enhanced without the bulk and weight; red as in the normal color of the fur; and rectangular as in the outline of the body, being longer relative to its height than the Fox Terrier.
It has a double coat with the outer part being straight and wiry, lying flat against the skin. A trim is always necessary to keep the Irish Terrier looking debonair. It is a lively dog and good with people especially children. The Irish Terrier also tends to be bossy with other dogs and thinks nothing of picking a fight with members of the same sex. With strong guarding instincts, it makes an excellent watch dog, very good at sounding the alarm at the very first sign of trouble.
In the Firehouse Dog film, Rexxx, the Irish Terrier, had a great time getting the upper hand of humans. With the help of the script writer and special effects team, of course. Rexxx started as a canine superstar. A film stunt fall from a plane that went wrong put him out on the streets with its Hollywood owner, Trey, played by Dash Mihok, thinking that he had died in the accident.
On his own, Rexxx had plenty of opportunities to display his abilities. Like in the scene where he eluded an over-confident Animal Control catcher with a superbly executed spring-mattress-assisted somersault over a seemingly insurmountable high link fence. Soon Rexxx came upon Shane Fahey, the son of the fire chief of Dog Patch Firehouse and Rexxx adopted Shane. Adopted like in moving into Shane’s life and bedroom, taking over Shane’s bed and making meticulous order out of Shane’s typically chaotically cluttered room.
Rexx now became part of the firefighting team. His exploits hit the headlines and brought him back in contact with Trey, his original owner, who was overjoyed to be re-united with Rexxx. However, Rexxx had already tasted life on the other side of the street, so to speak. At the first sound of a passing fire-engine siren, he turned his back on a life of luxury and returned to take his place in the line of fire.
In the end, Trey accepted the fact that Rexx had made his own choice in life and gave the leash over to Shane. Rexxx then found his true calling as an able member of the Dogpatch Firehouse team. Definitely, he did not consider himself to be just a decorative mascot.
In Firehouse Dog, Rexx showed that it was worthwhile to follow one’s heart and not live a lie, however luxurious it may be. See the Firehouse Dog DVD and be moved to find your own true path in life.
