Dogs as Pets
Having a dog is almost like having a new family member. It needs the care and commitment of each and every member of the family. If you are thinking of bringing home a dog as a pet, then make sure every member of the family is interested in a dog. Dogs are social animals and need a lot of attention and care from each and every member of the family.
Dogs are the most popular pets, more so because of their unflinching desire to please everyone around. Their enthusiasm and energy is infectious. They will bring cheer in an otherwise silent home and are loyal and loving. The truth is that they ask for so little but have so much to give you in return. In fact, dogs have been known to be stress busters and been helpful in easing off a lot of psychological problems in humans such as depression.
Dogs are essentially very intelligent animals with a strong sense of smell, a characteristic which has enabled them to be indispensable for security and police departments. They also serve the community by acting as guide dogs for the blind, hearing dogs for the deaf, and herd dogs. Some rescue organizations which are into saving lives of innocent people also like to keep dogs as they have the ability to sniff out explosives and to locate lost or injured people. But the most important thing is that dogs are wonderful companions and are most sought after pets.
A dog lives for about 10-14 years and will require care, commitment, and attention throughout its lifespan. You have to take care of the dog by feeding it routinely, spending time with it and taking them out for walks. However, you have to be also ready to provide veterinary treatment to the dog if it falls ill. In case you find this proposition expensive, you can take the services of various insurance companies which offer insurance cover for dogs in cases of accident and illness. You have to also take care of the vaccination of your dog. A dog usually needs the first vaccination at around 8-10 weeks and after that annually. It is better to maintain a vaccination card to track the vaccinations. Dogs also require de-worming every six months.
Before bringing home a dog, be sure to bring the essential dog items. A dog bed will make him comfortable while a dog bowl will be used for feeding purposes. A collar and a leash might be required when you take your dog out for a walk. Similarly some dog chews and toys will provide the dog with some entertainment in the new home.
The grooming of your dog will depend on the kind of coat he has. If your dog has a short coat at small hair, you can groom with a soft brush and these types of dogs require minimum maintenance. However, if your dog has long coat, it has to be brushed and clipped to prevent it from over growing. You can get the required grooming items from any pet shop.
Although you might not want your dog to be highly obedient, some amount of basic training would be required for the purpose of socializing and creating a no nonsense environment at home. You would not want to own a Marley, would you?
Hope the above points will help you raise a dog in a loving and caring manner.
