In 1998, six movie production companies got together with Bruce McCulloch to make the Dog Park movie which Bruce McCulloch wrote, directed and also had an acting role in. Andy, the main protagonist, was played by Luke Wilson. Kathleen Robertson played Cheryl, Andy’s ex-girlfriend; Natasha Henstridge, Lorna, Andy’s new object of interest; Janeane Garofalo, Jeri, Andy’s friend and co-worker; Bruce McCulloch, Jeff, Jeri’s boyfriend; Kristin Lehman, Keiran, Andy’s new girlfriend.

There were many dogs in the movie including a Bulldog, a Miniature Doberman and an American Golden, Mogley, which belonged to both Andy and Cheryl.

American Goldens are derived from Golden Retrievers which originated from Scotland. The original Golden Retriever was a cross between a yellow-colored Retriever, Nous, and a Tweed Water Spaniel, Belle. The aim was to produce a breed suitable for retrieving water fowl.

The American Golden has a slimmer body-line than his British cousin, and has a dense and waterproof double coat with colors ranging from dark to light golden. American Goldens are very friendly dogs and treat both friends and strangers with affection. As family dogs, American Goldens are great. As guard dogs, American Goldens are more than likely to go with the intruders than to stop them.

Mogley, the American Golden in the Dog Park movie, was so totally upset by the break-up of his owners, that all three of them had to avail themselves of the services of a renowned animal psychologist, Dr. Cavan, played by Mark McKinney. In normal circumstances, this would have paved the way for reconciliation but then the movie would have ended before the audience would have hardly warmed their seats.

In real life, the dog park is a facility provided by the local authorities for dog-owners to bring their pets to do their thing. Amenities include separate double-gated entry and exit points, benches for the bipedals and utensils to manage the less-desired by-products of the quadrapedals. Dog-owners are expected to clean up after their pets.

In the movie, the dog park was the place for dogs to bring their owners to meet other dogs or other owners, as the case might be. It was supposed to provide the ignition point for romantic liaisons. Actually, there was a factor involved which the script writer overlooked. Anyone who loved his dog well enough to take it to the dog park would be hard put to find another human who could compete with the total love given to him by his pet.

Nevertheless, the humans in the movie tried their best. Andy, after being dumped for the umpteenth time, went looking for a new girlfriend. Became interested in Lorna, who was not interested in him. Ended up with Keiran, who bought him at a bachelor auction. In the meantime, he kept seeing Cheryl because they had to take Mogley, their jointly-owned pet American Golden, for therapy sessions. As convoluted as any human relationship could become.

So was the mess untangled at the end? Watch the Dog Park DVD and enjoy the spectacle of dogs leading humans.
