Cats as Pets
Cats can be wonderful pets if you wish to take care of them in a proper manner. Some people prefer cats over dogs because cats are small in size and do not need a lot of space to play. However, behavior wise cats are totally different beings than dogs. They will not hover around you for attention and will not show any signs of loyalty and unconditional love as dogs do. Cats are moody animals but are attached to their owners. They love to play with their owners and try to observe every aspect of what is going on around them.
If you are thinking of bringing home a cat, make sure you have time to spend with your cat. Cats are supposed to be detached creatures but still they need attention and care from their owner. They have very distinctive personalities and have unique preferences. Hence, it would be wise to prepare yourself with basic knowledge about cats before trying to get a cat.
Cats like clever play activities and intelligent communication with you. They would never be happy in just fetching a ball for you as most dogs would love to do. You have to device games and buy toys that might interest your cat. Cats also have an instinct to scratch and you should never try to stop them. Therefore, if you do not happen to provide them with a scratch pad and train them how to use it, you might be in serious trouble. An untrained cat might wreck havoc to your furniture and belongings if left unsupervised.
If you are new to cats, you might notice that they are pawing you off and on. This behavior is just an attempt to make friends with you and you should understand that they are showing affection to you and not trying to harm you.
Choosing the right cat for you depends largely on your lifestyle. If you live alone you will want to have a different kind of cat as opposed to when you are staying with your family. If you have children and time to play with your cat, then choose a warm and friendly cat. This way the children will also be happy and the cat will also feel at home. But if you stay alone and travel a lot, then a detached cat is the best bet. Similarly the age of the cat should also be considered. A small kitten will be playful while an older cat is more likely to be aloof and might have its own preference pattern.
Another point to consider is the fur of the cat. If you don’t have time, go for a less furry cat. Cats with furs might look very pretty but maintaining them will also involve grooming them quite often. If you can’t groom them then their hairs might get entangled and you might have to get their fur shaved which will look too bad. If you have babies at home or live in a small apartment, try to avoid the breeds of cats which are loud and noisy.
